The “Big Week”, Semana Grande in Spanish, or Aste Nagusia as it is called in Basque, is a week full of celebrations in the beautiful San Sebastián, which is especially known for its rich display of fireworks every night. It can’t really get more Spanish than this week full of festivities! All famous attractions from Spanish festivals are brought together in one big festival for this week in August.
The festival opens with a gunshot and a wide range and abundance of cultural events follow: parades and costumes fill the streets, sounds of traditional folk songs can be heard from every corner, beauty pageants, theatre shows and sporting events of all kind, such as a regatta, surfing and horse-racing can be witnessed. Many see the bullfighting as the highlight of the week, but the true attractions are the spectacular fireworks that light up Concha Bay each night. Every night at 10.45 pm the famous international fireworks competition takes place. The Concha Bay area fills with crowds that admire the 30-minute-long displays of one firework better than the next and San Sebastian literally erupts with light and fire.
Thousands of people pour into the city not only to marvel at the fireworks but also to be a part of the many sporting events or explore the innumerable street entertainment and bands performing throughout the city, as well as the fair attractions, dances, markets, food stands and street partying. The fun goes on the whole night, mostly in the bars of the old quarter, but the whole city is vibrating with the energy of the regal show that the city puts on in this week. All these sensational attractions make the “Semana Grande” one of the most exciting times of the year for a visit to San Sebastián!
